System Types Rising in Popularity

No need to worry about system compatibility – LUX has a thermostat for every system.

Here are a couple of systems growing in popularity that LUX thermostats are compatible with.

GEOTHERMAL HEAT PUMP

The ground absorbs nearly half of the solar energy our planet receives.  As a result, the earth remains at a constant temperature between 50 and 60F (10-16C) at a depth of just feet below the surface.  The air temperature above ground however varies greatly from summer to winter, making traditional (air source) heating and cooling least efficient when you need it the most.  Geothermal Heat Pumps take advantage of the nearly constant temperature of the Earth to heat and cool buildings.

Geothermal heating and cooling systems take advantage of the stable temperature underground using a piping system, commonly referred to as a “loop”.  Water circulates through the loop to exchange heat between your home, the ground source heat pump, and the earth.  This process provides a Geothermal contribution to the heating process, cooling process, and even hot water in some applications at very high efficiencies.  Geothermal heating and cooling systems capable of efficiency ratings of several hundred percent and can reduce your heating, cooling, and hot water costs by 50% or more compared to traditional heating and cooling methods.

The LUX GEOx is compatible with Geothermal heat pump systems, and also provides the installer/user with the flexibility of individual temperature differentials for up to 3-stages of heating and up to 2-stages of cooling.

DUAL FUEL HEAT PUMP

Traditional heat pumps have been heating and cooling many homes for decades.  They are not that popular above the middle of the country however, because while they can be very efficient in providing heating during the spring and fall months they can be expensive and inefficient to operate during the subfreezing temperatures present during winter months of northern areas.  Typically a traditional heat pump application would make use of an electric resistive element to supplement the heat pump’s operation or even operate as the only heat source (in Emergency Heat mode).  Many electric resistive elements are marginally capable of providing the amount of heat needed for an entire house, which generally results in an approximate geographic line of heat pump usage in the US.

A “Dual Fuel” heat pump takes care of the problems that are encountered in colder northern climates, by using a fossil-fuel furnace in place of an electric resistive heating element to supplement or replace the heating output of the heat pump to maximize comfort and efficiency.  During the summer months, the heat pump works like a high-efficiency central air conditioner.  In mild spring and fall weather, it provides a very cost-effective and efficient heating method.  As the temperatures drop heading into the winter months, a dedicated Dual Fuel thermostat will shut off the heat pump based upon local outdoor temperature and transitions all heating effects to the fossil fuel furnace.  Depending upon region and fossil fuel costs, implementing to a Dual Fuel system can pay for itself in approximately five years due to energy usage savings when compared to traditional heat pumps with electric resistive elements.

The LUX GEOx is compatible with Dual Fuel heat pump systems, and makes the installation even easier by providing the local outdoor temperature in real time based upon the customer’s zip code entered when setting up the thermostat’s online connection.  This eliminates the additional costs typically associated with having to run wires and mount a separate outdoor temperature sensor at the customers house.  The GEOx has both an adjustable low-temp heat pump cutout to determine when to transition to the fossil fuel furnace, but also an adjustable furnace cutout setting to ensure that the fossil fuel furnace does not run during outdoor temperatures that the heat pump is most efficient in providing heating.
